GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Family Practice Nurse Practitioner works as part of the medical center provider team performing a variety of direct patient services including diagnostic procedures, taking patient history, formulating, initiating and monitoring the total patient management plan for health center patients. The Family Practice Nurse Practitioner performs these functions under the general supervision of a licensed physician in a primary medical care setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Obtaining complete medical history from the patient, previous medical record, etc.
  2. Performing complete physician examinations on patients.
  3. Ordering routine and diagnostic laboratory and x-ray studies.
  4. Diagnosing acute and chronic illnesses on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and x-ray reports and the results of other diagnostic procedures.
  5. Formulating, initiating and monitoring patient management plans for each patient assigned to the midlevel provider, based on standing orders and/or consultation with the supervising physician.
  6. Adjusting medications according to therapeutic goals and explaining treatment to patients, families, and other clinical personnel.
  7. Consulting with physicians and other members of the health care team as necessary.
  8. Referring patients requiring hospitalization or assessment and management of conditions to the supervising physician or appropriate specialist, and following these patients with the physician.
  9. Rendering emergency care and treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, starting IV fluids, plasma expanders and medications, suturing of lacerations.
  10. Teaching and counseling of patients and families.
  11. Maintaining all records to comply with required standards, reviewing records regularly and obtaining physician counter-signatures of all notes where medical care was rendered by the midlevel provider.
  12. Participating in periodic review of the written policies governing services provided by Family Health Center, Inc.
  13. Participating with the supervising physician in a periodic review of the patients’ health care records.
  14. Performing other necessary duties as required by the Family Health Center, Inc. to meet the goals of providing primary health care services.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Family Practice Nurse Practitioner reports to and is supervised by the practicing physician according to the Mississippi Board of Nursing Verification of Protocol. The Family Nurse Practitioner supervises the work activities of the clinic nurse assigned to assist in patient care and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

EVALUATION:

The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing, and will be carried out by the Chief Medical Officer. It will include the essential duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior. Formal evaluation will normally be performed annually, but may be initiated at other times by the Chief Medical Officer, or Chief Executive Officer. At least annually, the evaluation will incorporate relevant findings of the health center’s quality assessment and improvement program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Graduation from an approved Family Practice Nurse Practitioner training program.
  3. Approval of the State Board of Medical Examiners to serve as a Nurse Practitioner.
  4. Demonstrated competence to perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner in an ambulatory care setting.
  5. The ability to communicate effectively with members of the staff, the patients, and the public through writing, speaking, and in presentations.
  6. The ability to convey a caring attitude to all members of the community served by the Family Health Center, Inc.
  7. National Certification plus five years experience is required for classification as Nurse Practitioner II.
  8. National Certification plus ten years experience is required for classification as Nurse Practitioner III.

STATUS:

  1. With regard to the Fair Labor Standards Act, this is an exempt position.
  2. With regard to the OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens Act, this is a “High risk” position.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as to that of working in a health center (clinic) environment.

SALARY:

The salary for this position is determined by the Chief Executive Officer in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined by the FHC Board of Directors.

Pay:

$75,000.00 – $105,000.00 per year
